Dreadnought Clay Roof Tiles

Over 200 Years of Tile-Making Tradition

Dreadnought has been making roof tiles in Brierley Hill, England since 1805, when Mr. Hinton and Mr. Perry began producing smooth, clean-edged tiles in the traditional English size.

While the delivery methods have changed—from horse-drawn carts to diesel (and soon electric) trucks—the pride and craftsmanship behind each tile remain just as strong today.

DREADNOUGHT FAQ

What makes Dreadnought shingle tiles unique?

Dreadnought’s smooth-faced clay shingle tiles are known for their dense composition, rich natural colors, and crisp, clean lines. They’re made using traditional methods and high-quality Etruria Marl clay, without the use of artificial stains or pigments.

Are Dreadnought tiles suitable for heritage or restoration projects?

Yes — Dreadnought tiles are an excellent match for restoration work due to their historically accurate appearance and durability. They’ve been used throughout the UK on listed buildings and in conservation areas.

Can Dreadnought shingle tiles be used for vertical cladding?

Absolutely. These tiles are frequently used for vertical applications, both indoors and out, adding texture and depth to gables, facades, and even interior feature walls.

What color options are available?

Dreadnought offers a range of natural fired colors including Staffordshire Blue, Brown Heather, and Plum Red. Each tile’s color is a result of the firing process, not added surface treatments — ensuring long-lasting beauty and colorfastness.

Do these tiles require any special installation methods?

While Dreadnought tiles follow traditional installation techniques, it’s important to use skilled installers familiar with plain tile layouts, proper batten spacing, and tight tolerances. We’re happy to offer guidance or connect you with experienced professionals.

How durable are Dreadnought tiles in harsh weather conditions?

Extremely. Dreadnought tiles are frost-resistant, storm-proof, and have been tested to meet or exceed industry standards. Their dense body and low water absorption make them ideal for North American climates.
